Thomas Jackson - Postmortem

I acted as the programmer for this project.

By looking at the items I listed on the Kanban board, I expected to spend 10-11 hours working on adding additional movement mechanics and other blueprints to exist within the level. In total, I only ended up taking around 7 hours, which means I may be able to aim higher in my next project. The other 15 hours I spent on this project were devoted to resolving a lot of issues with github, and playtesting to make sure everything worked in the actual level the same as it worked in the editor.

The most difficult obstacle my team needed to overcome during this assignment was easily collaboration through github. We started off on the wrong foot by misunderstanding the way branches interacted with main, and that led to a lot of frustration and long hours trying to sort everything out so we could all be on the same page. On the first day of this assignment my group believed we could create three levels for the final game, but due to our issues early on we had to cut that down to two levels that eventually combined into one larger level. I think this did in some way help the game, as it now feels like a complete experience instead of a segment merely teasing the idea of something larger.

After concluding this project, the most important lesson I’m able to take away is that setbacks are only as demotivating as you allow them to be. I felt very stressed in the first half, when I felt like I wasn’t able to contribute anything due to the issues with github. But after a meeting with Professor Foster, I was brought back down to earth and we were able to finish the project.

I think I’m most proud of the modifications I made to the first person character. I’ve never worked with a first-person blueprint before, only top-down and third-person. Everything I added such as the crouch and the pause function worked smoothly. For the next project I hope to add even more tools for a player to use in their movement set, and push myself outside of standard functions that exist in most other games of similar genres.
